A great read! Malachy wrote in the style of a man telling a story. The prose is not fancy but reflects (I think) the way he probably spoke to his friends or his family as he related some of the amazing stories of his life. He obviously worked hard at whatever he did, loved his family and was a great success.My ancestors came over much before Malachy but, from bits and pieces of information provided by my late parents had adventures quite similar to Malachy. I wish that they had written down those stories or were alive during my life so that I could hear them. Malachy's stories are, I think, a substitute for hearing theirs. I'm grateful that his son encouraged him to write this book as it's probably the closest thing to actually having met the man.

I never had the honor of meeting Mr. Donoghue, but in this memoir that speaks of his experiences or growing up in one culture, then learning a very different culture he moves into, I felt as though I've known him all my life. In many respects his is a similar story to that of my grandfather, and reading "The Way It Was," I felt as though I were once again in my grandfather's living room, hearing his voice. My thanks to the Donoghue family for publishing this wonderful book.

Malachy was a valued friend. I had heard many of the stories from him over the years. It is good to have them collected in a book that I can return to at any time to remind me of this remarkable man.

Great read - very inspirational - It really makes people appreciate the older generation and the accomplishments they made.

The author had some amazing experiences in his lifetime and it was a pleasure to read about them. He had a real gift of storytelling and I was never bored with this book.

Very good read,as my parents are immigrants from Ireland around the same age as the author and settled in the same Bronx neighborhoods there is a lot I can relate to. The travel stories are very interesting.

I've known Malachi and Maureen through my very good friend Gerry Garvey(his sister-in-law) Reading about his life and adventures brought back many memories of the kind and generous family members that I've had the privilege to know.

Love this book. To read and learn how my Uncle lived and how life was like for him in Ireland . Highly recommend this book

To be able to search for specific groups and their history would have been a nice addition. This book gets too caught up in doing lists and tables. An addition of a searchable appendix in the back would have been a great addition. I would have been very interested in the history of specific groups and what their members are doing now (if they're still alive..which may not be the case in many instances). This book is juist not what I expected.

Due to the popularity of T.J. Lubinsky's "American Soundtrack" series on PBS there has been renewed interest in the music we call "doo wop". As an avid collector of 45's, I became interested in the genre in the late 1980's. Collectable Records had reissued hundreds and hundreds of doo wop records.There was just one problem. There were simply no reference books available to help me distinguish the great stuff from the mediocre or bad. In 1992, the original incarnation of this book entitled "Doo Wop: The Forgotten Third of Rock and Roll" was issued. It was a quite literally a godsend. It was very apparent that the authors loved their subject matter and I referred to this book constantly.In 2000, Dr. Anthony Gribin and Dr. Matthew Schiff released the updated version of their book. Now entitled "The Complete Book of Doo-Wop", this expanded version includes a complete "songography" of just about every doo-wop 45 rpm record ever made. The list is arranged alphabetically by artist and includes song title (both A & B sides), year of issue and record label and number. All these years later I still find myself referring to this on a regular basis. But the most useful portion of the book for me is the list of the "Best 1000 Doo-Wop Songs." This list is what really helps one seperate the wheat from the chaff. And while one may quibble about individual entries on that list, I have found it to be remarkably accurate over the years. It is what really helped turn me on to the music of artists like the Harptones, the Cardinals and the Ravens to name just to name a few. One of my favorite features in the updated version of the book is a list of "100 Recommended Pre-Doo-Wop Recordings". On this list you will find music by such artists as the Four Vagabonds, the Deep River Boys and the Boswell Sisters. This is all great stuff and definitely worth a listen. Finally, there are dozens of wonderful photographs, a doo-wop aptitude test, doo-wop crossword puzzles and so much more. For any collector of American popular music this book should be an essential part of your library. Highly recommended.

Great reference book with a few missing pieces, i.e., made no reference to classic song: Eddie My Love by the Teen Queens?! However it was researched and written by learned individuals and not "Vinnie in the neighbor's garage."

Not too many books actually "increase in value" over such a short period of time, but "The Complete Book of Doowop" is a fine example of a reference book that has accomplished that feat...in two ways...I had purchased the earlier book, "Doowop..The Forgotten Third of Rock and Roll" (616 pages) shortly after it was released in 1992 (price was $19.95). The book was the best single reference available on the subject of Doowop, and the information contained in "The Forgotten Third..." had never before been presented in a single reference. From cover to cover, it is a valuable reference for the Doowop enthusiast, disc-jockey, as well as those of us that "thought we knew it all".Eight years later (2000), Drs. Gribin and Schiff" released a second book, "The Complete Book of Doowop" (496 pages...priced at $24.95), and the subject of this review. Although alot of the material presented in "The Complete Book..." is available in it's predecessor, "The Forgotten Third...", the authors have added additional information that greatly expands the reader's knowledge base on Doowop. From beginning to end, this reference pours with accurate information on the music and groups that contributed to the Doowop era.Over the years, both books have become more valuable; 1) as a definitive reference on the subject of Doowop, and 2) the price that they both currently bring in "used condition". It is not unusual to see these books for sale on the internet for 2-3 times their selling price at time of release, sometimes even higher.In summary, if you are interested in Doowop, and the vocal groups that "made it a part of Americana", there are no better references available on the subject, and I highly recommend that you add "The Complete Book of Doowop" to your library.

I really wanted to like this book but it had a few core problems for me as a reader.1. The premise of the entire book is based on a mildly interesting insight that gets expanded to book length. It's as if the author felt he stumbled upon a revolutionary idea that stood to change everything about the way people discuss god, which could all change if only people could just bet people to see his point. The basic premise is that people mean (at least) two separate and distinct things when talking about the existence of god. The author asserts there are really two definitions out there: God and "god". With respect to God - Lindsay treats this as a theological/mythological proposition regarding an actual entity. Interestingly enough Lindsay is comfortable saying this version of God does not exist. But then there's "god" - which Lindsay treats as a psychological catchall denoting certain social/cultural values and/or psychological needs of the speaker. Here Lindsay says "god" demonstrably exists...and why not....if all that is meant is a subjective report on a person's internal psychology.According to the author it's the failure to distinguish between those two things that leads atheists to misunderstand and therefore mishandle the typical god conversation. (While failing to note the theists responsibility in this area too.)My main problem with this argument is that it's clever as far as it goes but ultimately ends up being of little value or utility. In my experience theists almost always use the term in both ways simultaneously and inter-dependently and will defend both meanings as if they were one inseparable or one and the same. Thus it is not sufficient to say it's incumbent upon the atheist to understand how the other speaker is using the term. The tricky part is bringing the theist to acceptance of the the basic distinction/dichotomy as well....which is to say that in order to get out of the typical points and counterpoints of theistic debate.....the theist TOO must come to the realization that while "god" may exist......God almost certainly does not. Good luck with that......Structurally I also found the book to be a bit frustrating. It felt as if the author spent half the book telling me what he was going to tell me. It left me feeling like the first half of the book was merely an extension of the foreword and could have been discarded in favor of simply getting to the point. Organize your argument and present it.....stop wasting space and time telling me how brilliant your point is going to be when you eventually come round to it...and just get on with it. This is particularly frustrating when the ultimate point that really isn't all that brilliant, ground breaking, or revolutionary, once you come to it!! Meanwhile, the actual points made were rather redundant and repetitive with the author expounding on the same point in multiple ways without necessarily illuminating things any better.Lastly, I also found the book to be rather short of practical advice for how one might go about changing the nature, tone, or course of the theist/atheist conversation. It was if the author believed that if only atheists could understand and accept the God/"god" distinction then entire format of the age old conversation would change of it's own accord....forgetting of course that theists must also be brought round to this new POV as well.All in all a mildly interesting point of little utility that was stretched WAY too thin by pulling it to book length.

This book gives a whole new twist to the problem of religion in society. That people use the concept of God as a source of passive control over an uncertain and dangerous world- that Americans will prosper and never have calamity it cannot handle. People give trust to this abstract notion of God to take care of circumstances. They have no idea how this abstract God would accomplish such a feat. The circumstances are too complex or mysterious- like people don't understand the power and mystery of the Sea so they created Poseidan, the Sea God. People attribute Natural events to God and assume there is some force out there, looking after people. People assume there is some jealous force in nature somewhere up in the hills or the sky looking after us. This goes back into thousands of years of mythological assumptions that there must be some force out in nature which can help or hurt us. We assume this force created everything that is. We just have to appeal to the Good side of this force and we will be OK. We don't have time to read a 300 page physics book about the origen of the Universe. Our ancient mythology book tells us us with great authority that the controller of all things, God, actually made the Universe. We don't have any idea how ancient stone age people could figure this out but we're not going to throw out a big old myth that just "has" to be true. In Sweden people's needs are met by the Government so they reduce their reliance on God. Instead of puffing up the notion of God and trying to prove or disprove the existence of God we should be working together to solve our own problems and give up the notion of God. We should help each other solve problems by national means, not mythological means.

I’m here to be supportive of Mr. Lindsay, who was (I think) the lead author of the infamous Portland dog park rape culture paper. Anyone who can write and (almost) get away with that stuff is OK by me. I’ve read the first chapter and skimmed the rest of the book. Is Mr. Lindsay just now catching up with James George Frazier’s The Golden Bough, William James’ The Varieties of Religious Experience, or even Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra? I get the impression he thinks he has nailed the very last nail in the theistic coffin, but theism has survived tougher challenges by more knowledgeable people and persisted. I suspect it will do so after this book. Just don’t tell Mr. Lindsay. It will shake his faith. And if he reads this review: I love you dude!

A fantastic extension of the topic of why people believe. This book calls nonbelievers to become non-theists and rise to the occasion and needs of those who are psychologically still wedded to a beliefs/a belief community. While I am still looking for more on the physiological needs of faith/faith communities I think this book sets up the proper foundation. While politically I find Atheism and Firebrand Atheism relevant and useful political term/communities, this book moves toward more effective ways of communicating about belief. Lindsay gives a place to the fact that lots of intelligent people believe...because they psychologically need to. Taking this seriously should allow interested (post)atheists to focus on more meaningful tactics/strategies in the culture war, and ideally step away from arrogance of our own superior rationalities and the many fold efforts to build quasi religious groups by demonizing out groups.

I have read a lot of books on trauma, PTSD, etc over the past two years. This one is a great synopsis of the trauma but also takes it from the individual to the national level with excellent questions. Almost all of the books I have read have not included the spiritual element. This one does. That is needed just as much as the emotional, physical, intellectual ways of addressing the issue of trauma from the individual to the nation state. I would say if you can only read one book on trauma - this should be the one.

I gave this four stars, but honestly I had mixed feelings. The book was well written, and much of it made sense and was well thought out. However, there was one little chunk that lost me here. It basically stated that victims, in order to recover, needed to discover within themselves what they had done in order to cause their aggressor to harm them. I had SERIOUS issues with that. Skip that chapter and it isn't a bad little book

Excellent introduction. It leaves you wishing for more. But then—it is a "Little Book."

This is a good book for anyone who has had something tramatic in their life happen. I read it once and am going to read it again because it has great section on helpful advice.

The most amazing book I've read about trauma, and how to break out of the cycle of trauma. Yoder packs so much information in such a little book. I think it is a book that everyone she read, especially if you work with people because you will see how most of us are effected in some way by trauma.

This small book helps me to understand how to respond to traumatic situations as well as helping others to cope and manage traumatic situations.

I found the language complex and difficult to get involved with..

The clear definitions about the many kinds of trauma found in today's world are very helpful, as are the suggestions for accompanying folks through each type to promote healing.
