I first met Nora about 14 years ago at a small local bookstore in Tulsa. I had no idea who she was and had never read one of her books. During a lag in traffic I went over and we talked. I had just moved to Oklahoma from the DC area and we discovered we hadn't lived far apart. I ended up purchasing three books, having no idea whether I would enjoy them. I've since read everything she's written, including her JD Robb Death series.I have to say this us absolutely the best she's ever written. I read ut twice and ut was just as good the second time. Nora has really out done herself with this one. You'll love Brooks and Abagail. It has suspence, humor, sadness. Don't miss tis one--it's the best yet.

Only Nora Roberts can make me sit down and devour a 500 page book in less than 24 hours. I enjoy her writing style, I love her characters, and I thought this was the best stand-alone novel that she has written in some time. Well worth the honor of her 200th publication!Elizabeth Fitch leads a very sterile and pre-planned life: conceived from carefully planned artificial insemination to a woman lacking in emotion, a prodigy with an eidetic memory who is pre-med at Harvard at the age of 16, and still a teenage girl who feels the need to rebel as she struggles to become her own person. Her single act of rebellion results in death, being targeted by the Russian Mafia, and her entering into witness protection. Now, 12 years later, she is still hiding but as Abigail Lowry in a small Arkansas town. The Chief of Police, Brooks Gleason, has taken a professional - and personal - interest in her and Abigail has to decide if being alive is enough, or if she wants to actually live a life she never thought she could have.Nora Roberts, in my mind, always spins a good tale. I will never claim her books are full of unexpected twists and turns or worthy of a National Book Award, but they have solid, well-developed plots, that are enjoyable to read. I thought this book was a cut above her normal. Not because of the plot, which was good, but because of the lead female character. I really liked her! She was incredibly smart, unbelievably courageous, and just a little socially awkward as truly brilliant people can be. My heart broke for the 16 year old girl and cheered for the 29 year old woman - both of whom made difficult decisions.And now, I am left with the same feeling I always have after finishing one of Nora's books: why did I read that so fast?! However, I am physically incapable of drawing out the experience and savoring it. I have to consume it in one fabulous gulp. Luckily, her next new book comes out in just two weeks, which I fully intend to blissfully devour as well :)

I'm probably not what you'd consider a "typical" Roberts reader. Married father in his early 60's, but I have enjoyed many of Ms. Roberts' novel, particularly her "...In Death" series."The Witness" touched and thrilled me like few other of her novels. While some of her characters are stock (Brooks' hippy-dippy late-middle aged mom is probably my generation). Still, the power of this brilliant, damaged young woman with a cold-blooded heartless mother, not too different than my maternal grandmother, who has to not only survive while hunted, but must come to terms with her own humanity as a woman, is surprisingly touching. The man who reaches her, against her own inclinations is a bit flawless (OK, nothing's perfect), but still works. And being named Brooks after perhaps the greatest 3rd baseman, Brooks Robinson, is catchy.The heavies, as usual in Roberts' novels, are a bit cardboard, with no redeeming qualities, so you just hate 'em.Still this is a favorite read.

BOOK REVIEWThe Witness by Nora RobertsEven if it’s not quite beach weather, The Witness might qualify as beach reading. Often “beach reading” is used as a euphemism for lighter literary fare. I suppose this book could qualify -- it is definitely not War and Peace. However, it has many qualities to recommend it. Certainly, the characters are multi-dimensional and the storyline gripping.It is a coming-of-age tale where a young girl’s first attempt at independence has far reaching and life changing results. As the title indicates, Abigail Fitch is witness to a horrifying series of events. Her very existence is threatened and she is forced to survive by her wits alone.Woven into this narrative is a love story. Abigail must learn to trust when everyone in her life has failed to earn her trust. We are “witness” to this flowering relationship and her eventual growth and ability to both give and receive the love of another.Unlike many novels of this type, Ms. Roberts vividly describes the backgrounds and scenery of Abigail’s world. For instance, she writes:“The rain that had blown in the night before teased out a little more green.Now, early-evening sun shimmered through those greening branches, splashedon the road, flickered on the busy water of the little stream that wound through.”At its core, The Witness is a tale of suspense. The reader is drawn into a dangerous place inhabited by the Russian mob and crooked cops. A good outcome is never guaranteed. Abigail’s safety is threatened as much by the gangsters as it is by law enforcement who insist they can protect her. A final twist at the end of the story leaves one both breathless and satisfied. This is a good read – regardless of the season.

The first part of the book was enjoyable. Faster pace, some suspense, etc. But the pace slowed considerably, and we basically plodded along as a simple romance after that. If you enjoy romantic banter between characters, this will absolutely satisfy you. I felt like I was reading different books on Elizabeth Fitch and Abigail Lowery, and the "bad guys" never really made much of an appearance once Abigail was introduced. It was all wrapped up a little too neatly for me, and the ending seemed a little rushed like the author realized they were reaching the word limit and had to bring it to a close quickly.I guess I'm just not the happily ever after ending type. :)
