About the Author
Lao-tzu, whose name means “Old Master,” was, according to legend, a contemporary of Confucius in the sixth century B.C.E. and the founder of the philosophical tradition of Taoism.John Minford (editor/translator) is the translator of the Viking Penguin edition of the I Ching, for which he won the Australian Academy of the Humanities Medal for Excellence in Translation, as well as the acclaimed Viking Penguin edition of The Art of War. He is an emeritus professor of Chinese at the Australian National University.

Is there a best translation of the Tao Te Ching? The five thousand characters of the Chinese classic warn us against confusing models of reality (language/texts) with reality. Each translation mediates between pre-conceptual awareness and pYet we know that our apprehension of the text, like our apprehension of sensory 'input', is constrained by the way our organism has been nurtured, educated, programmed. "Still, she persisted"--which is why this text has been translated and published hundreds of times. Almost always each translation is inspiriting in some way because the translator/adaptor has been inspired by the original. Milford hopes his will inspire readers to practice the insights of Laozi in their daily life. To that end he translates, for each verse, Taoist commentaries from centuries past that he finds pertinent and helpful from an insight/practice standpoint. At the same time he pays great attention to textual fidelity. In my view it's a twofer that's not easy to find in this sort of work. A judicious list of further readings points readers in directions of their own choosing, whether that be Wayne Dyer or details on the practice of Taoist biological alchemy.
