About the Author
St. Jean-Marie Vianney was born in 1786 at Dardilly, France. After being drafted, leaving the army, and opening a school for village schoolchildren, he joined the minor seminary of Verrieres in 1812 and was ordained a priest three years afterward. While famously serving as cure of the town of Ars, he saw to it that his parishioners understood their evil pastimes, spending long hours in the confessional at a time. St. Vianney died at Ars-sur-Formans, France, in 1859, and was declared a saint by Pope Pius XI in 1925. His feast day is celebrated on the fourth of August.

These are the recorded sermons of a holy, dedicated altruistic man of God. A man who gave his "ALL" to saving souls. They are invaluable to lifting up our standard of moral conciousness and hopefully, our behavior. which is the main goal for the St. J. Vianney, who lived in France at the time of Napoleon. They point the way to Jesus Christ and to Heaven . . . and are clearly written and, to my opinion, are highly intelligent and show a sophisticated understanding of the human soul and our nature. They also show a very deep conciousness of our theological connection with Jesus Christ, our ever present Lord God , in a very real and fascinating way. Though the sermons were written long ago, they are just as valuable to us, now. These are timeless words.
St. John Vianney is commonly known today for his difficulties with Latin and of getting into the seminary. But as the story goes, the bishop recognized that quite possibly no one else on earth possessed such a deep yearning to serve the Lord nor such an assured vocation as this now beloved saint. We hear so often today of God's mercy and God's love, quite appropriately too as God is indeed both of those things. But what of God's justice? What of God's power? What of the striking possibility that we could be on the fast track to hell?Do not buy this book if you are looking for soft and fuzzy, superficially uplifting words. The holy Curé does not mince words. He tells us of the necessity to "be holy/perfect as our heavenly Father is holy/perfect" if we are to be made partakers in eternal life. One can only hope and pray that our priests today will assume a similar position of frank, charitable honesty as did SJV to make sure that we are all aware of just how many things that we do are not looked upon lightly by our Lord.Subjects include parenting, dancing/partying, foul language/wicked tongues, hell, the world, vanity, ignorance, pride...St. John Baptiste Marie Vianney - Pray for us.
This book was a big part of my conversion. The sermons will knock you on your butt! The Devil revealed to St. John Vianney, that if there were two other holy priests like him on this earth , that Satans Kingdom would be brought to its knees. St. John would spend 17 hours a day hearing confessions. This book will really make one question if their living a good catholic life or not. It deserves an A+.
I know this book has been well received over the years but I found it very negative and depressing. I finished the book only because it was on the list for our spiritual reading group but every chapter reinforces what terrible sinners we are.
Just good, solid straight talk about our faith from one of our great saints who was known for his great devotion to our Lord in hearing numerous confessions and giving Satan (whom he called "Le Grappin" the pitchfork) a run for his money! Recommended!
This book contains sermons written by Saint John Vianney. They are short (a page or few) and right smack to the point. I wish all pastors would read this and LEARN from this great Saint. The sermons are not sugar coated, the bar is not lowered, and sin is not watered down. If you are really in love with God, can take criticism with the attitude of learning from it, and are serious about getting to Heaven, then this book will be a blessing to you. Thank-you for your attention. See you in Heaven!
Thought I was a pretty good person until I read this book. The Cure tells it like it is. It is a Hell Fire Damnation set of sermons, but many hit home.
I have for a long time been a fan of the Cure of Ars. That is to say, I believe he is a trail blazer for sanctity. He is the patron saint of parish priests, and, reading these sermons, it's easy to see why. Here is a priest who cares only about saving souls, not about popularity, nor about human respect (which means, what people think about him), but has a passion for winning people for heaven, for Christ. He is not shy about telling people their faults, as this hard-to-get-hold-of book makes clear! He tells them the truth about themselves, shames them into living better, and holier, lives. I am concurrently reading his autobiography by Father Trochu, and in Trochu's book the conversion of Ars, Fr. Vianney's parish, is described in detail. His own life was one of prayer and penance, of fasting and all-night vigils. At the same time he pulled no punches about telling his people how they should live, too. He gradually and lovingly fostered a love of prayer and holiness in them, transforming this once-near-pagan village into a model of goodness and care for others. These sermons give a penetrating insight into his thinking and into his soul.
