A few things to keep in mind about this book: it was written in 1983, more than 30 yrs ago, the illustrations reflect the times and have a certain 70's style to them. I like the style and think it's beautiful, others have expressed in reviews that it is poorly illustrated. This baffles me because the artist is obviously extremely talented.This book is not a replacement for spiritual teachings, nor does it answer any spiritual questions. It can be used regardless of your family's beliefs about the afterlife. An atheist family could use this as effectively as a catholic or Mormon family. There is nothing about this book that would offend or contradict any religious or spiritual beliefs. This makes the book very versatile as it can be used by just about anyone. So what does the book explain? The basic fact of death. It explains that everything dies, including plants, animals and people. That is the way things are. It doesn't get emotionally involved, this is not a book that is going to leave you in tears. It is a matter of fact way to explain death to children, while still leaving the adults in their lives room to supplement this info with their own beliefs about what happens after death and the feelings that come with experiencing the death of someone or something close. If you are looking for a book that helps explain feelings about death, this book will not help you. If you are looking to explain that everything is born, lives, and dies and that this is the way of the world then this book does just that in a beautiful, non dramatic way. Your child will still have questions. I personally used this book when my five year old daughter's teacher died suddenly. She had already been told about death, had watched a pet die, and was familiar with the concept of death. Just like everything else in life that is difficult to accept and grasp death needs to be explained many times to children. My daughter wanted to read this book many times and it lead to great opportunities to discuss death, feelings about death, and it's inevitability. I found this book to be a great tool and reference for my daughter. I would recommend it to others.
This is a great book for kids to learn about life cycles & death in a matter of fact way. As an atheist I appreciated that there was no mention of heaven or god, just facts.
I am a child psychotherapist who works with bereaved children. In 25 years of practice this is by far the best, most concise and direct (without being heavy handed) and most beautiful way to approach this subject, even with adults. i've bought so many copies i can't keep track! The illustrations and the gorgeous wording almost bring me to tears, every time.
This book is amazing. My 4 year old has had some questions about death, and I wanted to get ahead of the game since she has some elderly people & pets in her life. This book explains in a way that she can understand that death is a part of life-- everything has a lifetime, and unless something gets too hurt or sick to heal, their life has a beginning and an ending. I love that people and their lifetimes are mentioned repeatedly, but never mentioned first or last... I know as a child the thought of people (or kids!) dying was a terrifying idea. This slips it in there withou making it the focus. I highly recommend it!
Got it for my 5 year old when they suddenly started experiencing an extreme fear of death (Apparently that's a common phase for kids this age). This book didn't just help my kid through it, but it actually made me tear up. Touching. Great for helping explain death to kids.
This was a great book to explain the death of. Great grandfather to my 5, 8 and 10 year olds. The 5 and 8 year old especially found it comforting. I know it stuck because a month later my 5 year old was still using the language from the book to talk about death.
I don't know that I'd call it "beautiful", but it is a good book and nicely written. It is more "scientific" feeling than some books in this category, but also poetic in the word choice. There aren't religious bits in this one. It goes through various life forms (plants, animals, people) discussing how everything has a beginning, an ending, and the between them is the living/lifetime. Some are short, some are long. "Matter of fact"
Though this isn't strictly about the death of a loved one, our three year old child really liked this book and remembers little phrases and concepts from it. It's been a good way to introduce the idea that everyone and everything dies eventually - even trees, animals, insects, etc. I would recommend it.
This has been very very helpful in improving children's awareness of life. The book emphasizes all life has an end, and thus helps them conceptualize that and apply it to their own life and others. Highly recommended personally and professionally (I work in mental health).
