Extremely valuable book.For me, it produced an entirely new set of distinctions and thinking to help me interact more deeply with my colleagues, customers and, most importantly, my own family. As a participant in Ms. Flores WEST program (upon which the case studies in the book are based), it helped reinforce and solidify the way I look at how I personally acquire new knowledge, skills and abilities.For my students, it has already produced a new classroom mood and "space of possibilities" for discussion and growth.By way of background: I've been an educator most of my life - from vocational level to master's degree level courses at the Naval Postgraduate School. Currently, I am an independent, corporate trainer. My customers are all in the top half of the Fortune 500 and I teach about a dozen, 2-day seminars per year with 15 - 25 students per seminar. I recently used Ms. Flores' new book in one of my 2-day seminars to help my students overcome a deep-seated mood of resignation they were in on a particular engineering-related topic. This was the fifth time teaching this course to this particular company so in some ways it was a form a "A/B" testing to see if I could produce a new outcome with the students. The feedback in class (and from their surveys) was immediately positive. I had the students read a few sections of the book the first night of class which, for a room full of engineers and production floor managers, produced an entirely new opportunity to explore their challenges and speculate on new ways for overcoming them.
I am lost at words, by which, I can express my gratitude to Gloria Flores for bringing forth this important body of work.Learning to Learn is a timely masterpiece. What we think of as education, is rapidly shifting. Most knowledge is freely available to anyone with an internet connection. I agree that learning to learn is the most important skill for this century.This book has inspired me at many levels. Here the author has laid down a serious groundwork and has introduced crucial frameworks for thinking about renovation and revolution much required in education. Author's articulation of innovation in the theories of education, building on the works of Fernando Flores, and the works of Hubert Dreyfus, is remarkably effective. The taxonomies and case studies articulated here are fantastic.This is a book I will be reading several times over in the months and years to come.
This book gives teachers and parents an insight into the importance of moods in hindering or helping learning. Moods live in the background of learning experiences and are often not noticed. This is true of all learners, not just children. With the many detailed examples, Ms. Flores makes a compelling case for importance of moods in the learning process. I believe the learning experience in schools would be greatly enhanced if teachers and parents saw the importance of cultivating certain moods in the learning process. I highly recommend this book for parents, teachers and all learners.

As a mother of two kids, as a professor, and as a consultant this book is fully recommended. Learning to learn is a meta-skill that is critical to our success in all the stages of our life. As children and adults, we need to cultivate this meta-skill in order to acquire new skills and to be successful in our careers and in our lives. In Learning to Learn Gloria Flores explores how moods affect our ability to learn by conducting or preventing us to learn, and more relevant, how we can learn to navigate our moods as a new meta-skill that will help us to learn. As Gloria states, we cannot avoid falling into unproductive moods, but we can learn not to be trapped by them. The navigation of moods is an important, and critical meta-skill, for individuals as well as for teams that are learning and transforming together. The book introduces us to moods and presents numerous case studies, showing how persons that became aware of their and others unproductive moods, could make changes by exploring assessments and standards producing those unproductive moods, and were able to make significant improvements in their lives.
Working with faculty, management and staff with my clients in higher education, I have found great receptivity to the ideas in this book. With case studies working with teams, Gloria Flores tells the story how we can accelerate our ability to move from being a beginner to mastery by paying attention to the positive and negative moods that show up for us in the learning process. There is no other book I know of that ties together mood and capacity to learn in a way that provides a roadmap for our individual and collective journeys through life. Additionally, I purchased a copy for my son who just graduated college and after enthusiastically reading it, he shared that the ideas in the book helped him understand where he got stuck in his younger days. It affirmed what he discovered about learning as he got older but never saw articulated with such clarity.
