I have been looking forward to reading this book and it was definitely worth the wait. Be REAL is a book that you will not be able to put down, because the way Tara shares her background, her "why", her passion and motivation will hook you from the very first page. Tara enlightens the reader by sharing her own personal experiences, showing her vulnerability and with such openness that you can really understand where she is coming from.Be REAL empowers all readers to know it is okay to share stories, to take risks, to come up against challenges, to get knocked down and to bravely face whatever comes up along the way. Her writing draws you in and pushes you to reflect and "monitor your heart rate." She ends each chapter with some questions to guide you as you think through your own practice, experiences and encourages the reader to share with her. I finished yesterday! I have not read a book that quickly in a long time. Since I follow Tara Martin on Twitter and I have a lotof the same theories on kids and teaching there were a lot of places that I was saying "Amen". There were a couple places where I would think "she is at an elementary, I can edit that for high school". It did a lot to rejuvenate me and remind me that I do a lot right by my kids.

This is the best book in Education I've read in awhile and I am so excited to start the new school year, meet my new students, be as REAL with them as I can be and form those relationships that are so important! I've already recommended this to all my teacher friends. I read this in two sittings and immediately was energized with Tara's energy. I also may need to get myself a pair of red heals LOL!!!!
Tara is a master of the use of metaphor- Creating space for the reader to fill in the gaps, make connections and create patterns. As a fellow neuroscience nerd, 40+ year educators and author I found the book pulling me into the story of her journey as an educator while, providing ways to build strong relationships with learners. As a sketchnoter the images she creates were powerful – “The entire scene was a junkyard of lousy decisions stacked one upon another.†As I read, I was reminded of Parker Palmer's book The Courage to Teach. Kudos Tara for a soulful message wrapped up in good writing.
